Russell Porter with human beatbox Beardyman (music)

Boing Boing tv's UK-based music correspondent Russell Porter interviews -- and coaxes an epic street performance from -- Beardyman, the human beatbox from Brighton. This dude is a totally unassuming normal guy who can flip a switch in his brain to make crazy perfect funky human beatbox sounds come out of his mouth. The ladies dig it, as you'll see around 08:13, when he lets loose on the mic with a flock of blonde birds surrounding him.

I blogged about Beardyman in 2007 when this crazy cooking video hit the 'tubes.

If you're in the mood for still more of him doing his thing, below is a popular YouTube video in which Beardyman shows up at some stuffy academic conference, and poses as a lecturer before breaking out into beats.

That's great! Though I'm not sure that that a creative-work presentation night sponsored by Bombay Sapphire should be considered a "stuffy academic conference", but that was to a great effect anyway!

He's good, but I like Braintax.

FYI-- Bernard Purdie was never actually a member of the JB's, though he has worked with James Brown (much of the "Reality" LP was actually session musicians, including David Sanborn -- simply recording with James Brown doesn't make you a member of the JB's). Jabo Starks and Clyde Stubblefield were the drummers in the J.B.'s.

And my vote for best beatboxer. . . Scratch of the Roots, simply because I can't figure out how he does those scratch sounds, whereas regular beatboxing I can understand.

An impressive berth of stamina, and coming from another beatboxer, I give him some props.

Scartol
wtf has Braintax got to do with Beardyman? Ones a rapper/producer and the other is a beatboxer..

And in fairness, Beardyman does shit Rahzel would never do, so it's a pretty tough comparison.

But, neither of them are Kenny Mohammed :p

@ #6. I second the props to Kenny Mohammed, as he is certainly the best beatboxer I've ever seen. I saw him open for Squarepusher in Chicago back in '04. He sampled Kraftwerk's "Trans Europe Express", which is certainly not something one would expect from a Beatboxer. ...definitely a geekgasmic experience.
Beardyman is no one to scoff at, though. "Kitchen diaries" made me laugh my buttocks off when it first hit the tubes.

Brother: you're right, Beardyman is innovative and self-deprecating in a way less-seen in hip hop. Kitchen Diaries is fantastic, no scoffing here :)

Also, Brother, we both spelt Kenny's surname wrong :)

It's Muhammad
