Russell Porter with Alice Russell (music)

UK-based Russell Porter chronicles alt music culture in the Porter Report with aggressive wit and offbeat charm.

Today, part one of his exclusive interview for Boing Boing tv with the soulful Brit singer-songwriter Alice Russell, whose musical influences include Chaka Khan, Jill Scott, Aretha Franklin, and Minnie Riperton. Here's the Brighton beauty's Wikipedia entry (with a decent discography); here's her MySpace page with tons of music clips, and gig dates.

Is it written somewhere that all female British soul singers have to cover The White Stripes? Not complaining.

I absolutely love TM Juke and Alice Russell, though I've only really heard the work she's done with Quantic (and I love it). Very surprising and cool to see them here on BB.

Alice and her band stayed at my house during SXSW '08, which was the first I'd heard them, but I'm a genuine fan now. Alice is amazing on stage, I haven't seen/heard a recording that does her justice.
