Miss Hooker 2008 Beauty Pageant
Today on Boing Boing tv, a glimpse inside the "Miss Hooker 2008 Beauty Pageant," the creation of artist Natalia Fabia. Nine glamorous punk pinups compete for the title, showing off such diverse talents as egg frying, fantasy whistling, and yo-yoing. Who will win? No actual prostitutes were harmed in the filming of this episode, just metaphorical ones (as in "we all sell ourselves here in Hollywood.").

Am I the only one who can't watch this?
For the last month or so I can't watch BBTV on Firefox. I'm forced to use IEtab all the time (and yes, I did turn of Greasemonkey and Adblock to be sure it's not the problem)
Is there a specific, considered reason why profanities are beeped out of bOINGbOING tv, or is it just because this is the established North-American practice? Does bOINGbOING tv have an age rating? Is it young viewers they are concerned about? Work environments?
@SEEFOOD
I have that problem, (the embeded castfire player doesn't load) but if i reload the page a few times (as silly as it sounds) then it appears.
It must be some random extension that we both have, I could go through, trying with each one, diasabling it and trying again, but I am too lazy :)!
oh, Jay Bentley, you are so charming! how do you make a hooker cry? hoho that's a good one! and greasy hipsters dressing up like mock hookers, so cute and clever!
A bunch of privileged chicks reclaiming something that was never theirs in the first place? How hilarious. What's next? Miss Fake Handicapped? Miss Faux 3rd World? Here's hoping you or your families never have to deal with all the bullshit, danger, and issues that come with being an unlicensed sex worker.
this is the first bb.tv in the last month that i've watched all the way through...
There does seem to be some problem. I can sometimes see the video on the main page. Sometime I have to click through to the Boingboing TV page to see it and sometimes to the actual post on the boingboing tv page.
Hey! Listen up all you nerdy bloggers... those girls may not actually hook on sunset blvd. but they are FAR from privileged. i happen to know the contestants represented have real jobs in the heart of scumy Hollywood... Burlesque dancers, bartenders, shopgirls, tattoo artists, piercers, art models etc.
all you voyeurs use girls like us to get your rocks off. don't deny it.
and sure, we take you money. but having to hear your hypocritical banter every day of our lives is too much. what are you christian or something?
i'd way rather be a nerd than a hipster. it seems like the hipster way is to pretend to be poor and co-opt/misappropriate other's culture/way of life.
yes, the people may not be priveleged but at least they are not in a place where they feel that hooking has to be an option.
it's not that we're not cool enough to grasp your genius, it just rubs me wrong to hear lame jokes like how to make hookers cry, etc. I just got the sense that it was more about exploitation than good hooker love. i dunno, if the event raised $ for positive groups like www.sexworkersproject.org or www.bayswan.org it would have been less lame. by the way, there's no need to sling terms like christian around. let's try to keep it civil here.
...but you can throw terms like hipster my way? how nice it must be to feel so superior.
Most of us have done dirty things for money, but you live though it, sometimes you make even make a joke out of it. That is what human beings do.
perhaps you have confused the word "hooker" with "prostitute" While "prostitute" is not as easily defined using anything other than the term "sex act" the word "hooker" is routinely used with affection similarly to "Ho" or sometimes "bitch" Like when one woman refers to her girlfriends as "my bitches". and in THIS case was used metaphorically and not in a sarcastic or mean way. Perhaps you could suggest a more PC term that would satisfy you and other hooker activists like yourself?
