Tyson Ibele, 21-year-old animation savant

Today on Boing Boing tv, we explore the work of award-winning, self-taught animator Tyson Ibele, who is based in New Zealand. In this episode, the 21-year-old artist explains that he taught himself animation during high school using free software freeware. He says:
I was originally introduced to 3d animation by a great freeware program call Anim8or way back in 2000. Soon after, I discovered a program called 3d Studio Max and I have been working with it up to this point. I now work for a company called MAKE.

So, I have several years experience with 3d Studio Max, and am familiar with everything from modelling to texturing to animation.

Tyson offers advice for would-be animators among the BBtv audience, and shares tips and tricks for anyone interested in this digital craft. (Ed. Note: the "MAKE" in question is not the DIY craft publication, but a visual effects and animation studio, "Make Visual.")

that military video game-like sequence was particularly amazing.

So he did his reel using Max? 3DS Max is the furthest possible thing from free software. It runs about $4,000 and has a yearly license fee.

Blender (http://www.blender.org/) is an excellent example of a free 3D app.

Not to derail the dude's talent, because he has very good chops - but I don't want people not familiar with 3D to assume the "free software" blurb refered to what he was using.

Blaine, read the blurb again; nowhere is it claimed Max is free. (It's not claimed it costs $4K, either.) The tricky nature of the word "software" is what makes it vague.

These are all great, far better than that of which I'm capable, but I'm curious to see exactly what he's been working on with MAKE. What's amazing for an amateur becomes somewhat less so for a professional. I'm particularly interested in whether his characters have become more visually fluid and/or organic; textures seem to be the one lacking element. They're not easy, and some Hollywood studios still get them wrong.

Nevertheless, I am jealous. I'll be this talented next lifetime.

License Farm, read my post again; I'm making sure that people who aren't familiar with 3D apps won't assume it is.

Yeah, all the best 3D animators are self-taught. Autodidacts tend to pick it up the fastest and be the most flexible at problem solving.

Congratulations on the spotlight, Tyson. I've been following your work through CGTalk for the last few years and it's been great to see your steady growth as an animator and CG artist. Keep at it!

Very nice work, especially for being done in Max (jk)

I do think however, the administrators of the site should make it more clear that the BMW ad in the middle actually was a real ad created by a small studio in New York City for the bmwusa.com website and is not part of the featured artists portfolio. (And the music in the background the The Tough and the Lovely, glad you like.)

Seriously though who puts a 3d commercial in smack in the middle of someones 3d reel? The administrators of the site or at least the editor of the video should have enough sense to realize this is very misleading. It caused a lot of undue confusion in NYC this morning, so maybe be a more thoughtful about where you place your ads huh?
