Steampunk Tree House
Xeni visits the Steampunk Tree House, a 40+-foot-tall interactive sculpture created by a group of artists in Oakland, CA, and assembled for the first time at Burning Man. More than 60 people helped to create it, and in today's episode, you'll hear from project participants Alan Rorie, Nathaniel Taylor, and David Shulman.
(Special thanks to Steampunk Tree House creator, project manager and creative director Sean Orlando. Thanks also to the team at Kinetic Steam Works. Still image shown here by Neil K of burningcam.com, thanks to VA for air travel, and Wayneco for accommodations).
Update: Scott Beale has been following this project for a while over at Laughing Squid blog: Link.

It is the house of the tree of the future in where the branches are iron tentacles. Our children will already let play in those traditional wood houses and will play in these of iron and steel.

This is another of my favorites of the BBTV crop. That this work of art is more than an inert sculpture, engaging in both a physically participatory way AND a narrative, is really quite inspiring. I hope the SteamTreeHouse team considers bringing it east at some point, or that I hie myself to an event westernly at which they exhibiting.
I love that tree house -- the only think it's missing is a steampunk Ewok! But seriously, that tree would have been the only thing that could ever lure me to Burning Man.
That steam whistle guy is dreamy.
Come to think of it, they're all dreamy.
Steam punks are dreamy.
Hey kids. I'm in the northwest burbs of Chicago. Is there a steampunk collective in the area? If not, we should start one. I'm starting to learn how to weld. If you are interested, email me at "szostek777 at yahoo.com."
