Mister Jalopy/Homemade 3-D Cameras
Mark talks to Mister Jalopy, a guy who scavenges the world for discarded treasures, often creating some treasures of his own. He shows us the "museum in a jar" he discovered at an LA garage sale. (@0:09-3:38)
And during a trip to Mister Jalopy's garage of delights, Eric Jon Kurland shows off his homemade 3-D movie camera made from scavenged parts, and gets into a stereoscopic camcorder duel with BBtv producer Nihar Patel. (@3:54-end).

Whether he knows it by that name or not, Mr. Jalopy seems to practice my personal spirituality/divination of thrift fu. The way I explain it is that whatever the universe wants you to know or have or use it will put in your path at a price which you are willing to pay for it. As an avowed craphound and an employee of a used book store the universe obviously wants me to know and have and use a lot.
The two shots from the 3-D cams and the BBTV cam looked like some nerdy mating ritual; if they'd been yelling in Klingon it would have been perfect. I'd like to see that tech applied to the production of custom View-Master reels (one of my anachronistic tech obsessions).
Wow, I second Mark. What a fortunate turn that Mr. Jalopy should become the curator of this little jar of treasures. Plus stereo video! what could be better?!
Best episode so far (to me anyway). Keep up the good work.
Similar to thrift-fu, I regularly practice the ancient act of alley-fu, where objects next to or inside of dumpsters are transformed into magical beings that follow us into our home. Our neighborhood in S. Chicago is particularly good. Best find is yet to be determined, there have been so many great ones.
For those of you in the US who need 3D glasses for this video, this is a wonderful time to pick some up for FREE. Just head to your local Walgreens, and there should be a box of 3D glasses sitting on the photo counter (if not, just ask the person there).
The glasses are the paper style you punch out and assemble. They're in an orange box that says "Live with Regis and Kelly" on it (apparently they're doing a 3D holiday episode). I was able to grab a handful. Just make sure to get them before Halloween.
Is that mutual infatuation I detect at the end of Mark's interview?
I want a 3d camera so bad!
Can you tape some 3D glasses to this site so I can view this please?
WSYCNG (5), I doubt it.
License Farm (1), GreatMiddleWest (3), you are spiritually enlightened beings.
I'll add that sometimes the universe uses us as agents of exchange, putting objects in our path that need to be transmitted to people whom at some future date we will recognize as the objects' true owners.
