In this edition of Boing Boing tv: a bizarre Japanese pop tune about butts is gaining in popularity, and spawning related manga and anime -- or is it the other way around? (related BB posts which tell the story about how a husband and wife animator team dreamed up the "butt biting bug": one, two).

Xeni, the audio in the moderation parts is quite noisy. Are you recording that with your MacBook's built-in iSight and microphone or something? I'd say this is actually OK, the Flash version most people see isn't ever going to be hi-fi anyways, and while you could use proper gear and make the mp4 version in 720p 16:9 OMGWTF etc., that wouldn't really be boingboing-y. However, some kind of noise-supression treatment on those audio parts would be swell. And maybe a little compressoring while you're at it.
Btw., the ad is still a bit loud compared to the adjacent parts.

Was trying to find the link to all of the other BB TV vids, then I found this tiny little grey link at the top of the page. Trying to hide it because this is still a beta? Come on guys, making it Blue or something. (I dunno, what color is "TV"?)
That Tom Ford segment may have been the most deserving of being followed by a Unicorn Chaser yet.
(I wonder when someone's going to invent a drink called a Unicorn Chaser. Would it taste like bubblegum? Or maybe like Vulva...)
I'm actually working on a comic wherein the titular character ends up a butt-biting fetishist at the end. I claim no inspiration from the eponymous bug. I do, however, admit to ripping off the punchline from an old Daffy Duck cartoon.
I like the color combination of the red top with the grey background. Keep experimenting. Were the second and third episodes taped significantly apart? Xeni's hair looks longer.
The sound levels in the podcast between the ad and the normal podcast is not at the same level. I had to turn it down when the ad came on. Is it possible to have everything approximately near the same audio output level?
I have to admit that, as an enlightened German viewer (yeah, right ;-) I find your incessant blurring of perfectly normal parts of the Female chest offensive.

Feels like you're getting more comfortable with the format, I'm loving BBTV.
Just a nit-pick, this isn't Tom Ford's first foray into fragrance. Men's fragrances, maybe, but his Black Orchid for women is wholly exquisite.
As for competing products, would you be offended if I didn't add a bottle of "XENITALS ORIGNAL" to my xmas list? Not that I wouldn't be tempted, of course.
I already loved you guys, but since seeing you on BBTV I am loving you even more!!!

Is it just me, or is animated Jackhammer Jill sporting a beard in the BBTV ident?
These are extremely well produced segments, hats off to your production team. I absolutely love the Jackhammer Jill animation - perfectly created, and the quick edit to and from sets it off nicely.
My concern - are you going to continue to use material that has already been featured on the website? It would be nice to see some new stuff featured here, rather than just a multimedia rehash of previous static blog data.
And where are the other doodz? No offense, Xeni, always nice to see you of course, but what happened to Mark? And Pesco... I wanna see Cory's facial expressions as he rips the RIAA a new one verbally.
I've got to chime in with the sound bellyachers. It's not so much that the ad is a little louder (it is) but that the overall sound volume is low. You've got a great editor, but he/she forgot to unplug the headphones, skip to the middle of a song in iTunes, and match to the volume.
Also, love the animated Jackhammer Jill. Who produced it?

Pfffft. Look at old magazine ads, or punk posters ... the grime is part of the charm. You want BBTV to sound like "this is not your father's Oldsmobile"??

I'll chime in with a production critique of my own: What's with the soft-focus? It looks weird when it's Xeni, but positively bizarre on Mark (in the first 'episode').

Michael Bernstein, I don't see that it looks any stranger on Mark than it does in Xeni.

A few answers @ everyone (and thank you very much, both for the kind words for the BBtv team and for the helpful criticisms)...
(1) YES other boingers are coming soon! We're taking it simple at the beginning, and gradually expanding out into more kinds of ways of telling stories... more contributors, more stuff out in the field... you'll see new things next week, and we'll expand further each week. One step at a time. The idea here is to TRY EVERYTHING. See what works, don't repeat what doesn't. What you tell us about what you like or don't like weighs heavily.
(2) Yeah, sorry about sound probs. We don't want to be too perfect or fussy or polished, but crappy sound or overly "hissy" sound with "host" speech is lame. We're working on it for the next episode. Sorry.
We will include more cowbell in the future.
(3) Animated Jackhammer Jill *IS* rad and was produced by Of The World TV. PEsco did a post about them today over on the main BB site, chekkitout: http://www.boingboing.net/2007/10/05/of-the-world-tv.html.

The guy sniffing his hand in the Vulva ad looks suspiciously like Andy Bichlbaum (Jacques Servin) of the Yes Men group. But once I checked out "www.smellmeand.com" the site didn't feel like a culture jamming effort. Might it be legit?! Eeeeewww!!

BTW, I *am* aware that 'soft focus on a guy looks even weirder' is a rather heteronormative aesthetic judgment. Oh well.
But I also think that in context (ie. geek-oriented TV) it looks kind of strange on Xeni as well, even given her 'glam' personal aesthetic.
Who knows how intentional it was? They're still on shakedown cruise.
i guess the sound guys probably know making levels right is a matter of using an adaptive compressor or using something that averages the RMS of each segment to the proper level (that's 83dB for movies, but probably 89 is better for tv since there's no need for that much headroom)
