Trailers From Hell/Lobotomy

In this edition of Boing Boing tv: on the Toronto-based blogto.com, we found this post about an artist and billboard hacker named Dan Bergeron, aka "Fauxreel," who offered discount lobotomies to the fine citizens of Canada. Insert joke about Michael Moore's "Sicko" here. Ba-dum. Anyway, Bergeron put up a phone number in the ad, and people who saw the billboard called in. You'll hear their responses in this story.

Next, Trailers From Hell, a cool site in which film directors share their favorite movie trailers -- their commentary is paired with the trailer, you watch both online. We see John Landis (Animal House, American Werewolf, Blues Brothers, the "Thriller" video) paired up with Hitchcock's Psycho -- and learn about the shitty food Hitchcock ate in the studio commissary!

Last, a Unicorn Chaser: illustrator Ape Lad drawing cartoon monkeys. Music in that segment: James "Kokomo" Arnold, (aka Gitfiddle Jim), playing Paddlin' Madeline Blues" (1930).

Technical note: We know the EFF anti-surveillance ad is crazy loud, we're working on that -- sorry!

Right below the embedded video? You know what's missing there? Huh? Huh? Yes! Links to the stuff you mentioned in the video.

If liking this new video is wrong, I don't want to be right.

I was going to comment on yesterday's about the great use of Ape Lad's art for the Unicorn Chaser, and then you go me one better and feature him! Keep broadcasting direct from my brain! Especially when it's in black & white. (nudge, wink)

As someone living in Toronto, I can say that the sign itself makes fun of other "$300 ____" ads. The most common one is the "$300 Divorce." It's in exactly the same style, and usually posted as 8.5 X 11 posters in bus stops.

A small technical suggestion: in both the last video and this one the EFF commerciail is noticably louder than the rest of the video. That's a traditional-tv trick I'd hate to see you guys emulate. Otherwise, keep up the good work.

Loving the new BoingboingTV feature!

Shout outs from Toronto's blogTO.com.

Please follow the link to the original story, which includes links to the artist's website and a bunch of other awesome billboard hacks he's done.

I'll second Fuzzy's comment. Yow, that EFF ad is loud! Great show, though.

Hey thanks guys! The EFF PSA volume issue is a goof, we're working on it. Links and episode info are now in the post, too.

Humm, i must say this ep felt a lot better then the first one. The first one felt like, I dont know how to say it, but as if things where just thrown together and see if it would stick.
Great to see the improvement and i cant wait for the next one now.

Xeni,
Great episode, just a quick heads up - www.blogto.com is actually pronounced blog tee-oh (tdot, tdot-o and t-o) all being common abbrevs for Toronto.
Also, this billboard hack went up just prior to Toronto's annual Nuit Blanche, an "all night art thing" (/all night party) that took over the city last Saturday from 7:03pm 'til sunrise.
Here's a photo that sums up the vibe rather succinctly, folks on tricked out mobility scooters parked if front of a geodesic dome made from florescent light tubes...

Ooh, the full info monty, facilitating googlification for future generations -- that's much better than the nakes three links I was having in mind and fully justifies the delay; I take it all back! :-) Thanks!

Congrats, it looks great! Thanks for writing up a brief summary below each video for us deafies. :)

BTW Xeni, you speak very clearly and enunciate very well - I can lipread about 90% of what you are saying on the video. No, this is not common in my experience - lipreading is partly deduction and context, and I can't just look at some random person and read their lips without a lead-in of some sort.

I'd like to submit this to Project ReadOn and see if they'd be interested in captioning the Boing Boing videos - email me if this isn't OK as I might not see a follow up comment here.

Thanks!

@Kathryn Hill, we've added "make this more accessible for hearing-impaired" to the tweaks list, I understand there's some Flash feature that does this automatically? Please, by all means, we'd be stoked to work with Project ReadOn, too. We would love to do a better job of being accessible to all.

Like Rocketboom on crack. I love it! Now all you need is a guerilla marketing campaign to promote it. I have the very thing - your own postage stamp sized 2-D barcodes - stick them up all round town as hyperlinks to the site. But you might want to wait until January when five U.S. carriers will be offering the scanners and software with cellphones. They predict that within two years 70% of the world's cellphones will be using this "put-a-hyperlink-anywhere" technology. You're welcome. Malkie, Paris.

Good job BoingBoing'ers

Be great to have a link to the iTunes page. Searched for it but it did not show up :(

Easier than adding it manually.

Otherwise cool as :)
